Gozo s Gaulitanus Choir turns 30

Celebrating a choir’s pearl anniversary at a time when most have been silenced worldwide is surely depressing, not least for Gozo’s Gaulitanus Choir. Its various scheduled 2020 events had to be cancelled, with its last ‘normal’ event taking place on January 1. Still, the organisation persevered, doing its utmost to enhance positivity through virtual contributions and some COVID-compliant public concerts. It was also a time to look back on its past. The Gaulitanus Choir was launched in 1990. Before that, its founder-director, Mro Colin Attard, then starting to make the rounds in musical circles, used to form ad hoc choral groups whenever needed, with choristers hailing from all over Gozo. However, upon being entrusted with two large-scale events for the Qala parish, it was decided that the choral group be formalised and named. The name ‘Gaulitanus’, meaning ‘of Gozo’, was chosen.

Neil Agius begins Malta-Gozo swim, with Santa in tow

Updated 12pm Olympian Neil Agius swam across the Gozo-Malta channel in two hours on Sunday, while towing a friend who sat on a paddleboard dressed as Santa Claus.   Departing from Marfa at 9.35 am, Agius was able to wrap up the challenge before lunch, with him and his friend Michel Galea touching land at Ħondoq ir-Rummien at 11.36 am. The journey is estimated to be around six kilometres in length.  Agius braved the fresh December waters and arrived to cheers and applause from his family and friends, who were beside him watching closely in a dinghy.  A few friends even jumped in and accompanied Agius in completing the challenge, as he swam the last few metres towards the shore.

Letters to the editor - December 18, 2020

Murals at the Main Guard I am delighted that the Main Guard is being restored. Between 1931 and 1972 it served as the Officers’ Mess of the 1st Bn The King’s Own Malta Regiment. May I add some observations to the otherwise very good article by Daniela Attard Bezzina (December 14). The last mural was indeed by Adrian Strickland in 1972. He was helped by the late Paul DeBono and myself. What was referred to in the article as “two sizeable flags” are in fact reproductions of the regimental colours of the King’s Own Malta Regiment. Adrian, Paul and I felt we had to paint the colours before the regiment was disbanded on March 31, 1972.
